    abject的基本意思有二,用于生活环境、事物的状态等时指“凄惨的,糟透的,可怜的,蹩脚的,绝望无助的”,即境况极为恶劣,有时仅指事物本身等级低或规模小;用于人或人的行为、动作时指“卑鄙的,可鄙的,下贱的,自卑的,怯懦的,奴性的,卑躬屈节的”,即地位卑下或奴颜卑膝。abject还可作“被抛弃的,遭拒绝的”解,是废语。 abject作“凄惨的,绝望的”解时在句中只用作定语;作“卑鄙的,下贱的”解时在句中多用作定语,偶尔(尤在美语中)也可用作表语。 abject不用于比较等级,但可用more、most修饰。
